Journey vs Trip

Journey = the travelling itself, often long (a 12-hour journey). Trip = the whole event, go + stay + return (a business trip, a trip to Paris).

The one-line answer

Journey = the travelling itself, often long (a 12-hour journey). Trip = the whole event, go + stay + return (a business trip, a trip to Paris).

journey

noun

the act of travelling from one place to another — emphasizes the travel process

  • The journey took six hours by train.
  • It was a long and tiring journey.
  • Her journey through Asia changed her life.

trip

noun

the whole experience: travelling, staying and returning — often short

  • We took a weekend trip to the mountains.
  • He's on a business trip to Dubai.
  • Have a good trip!

Memory trick

Journey = the road (the hours of travel). Trip = the event (the weekend, the purpose). You don't say 'have a good journey' to a business traveler — you say 'have a good trip'.
